The Artful Teacher

In-service professional teacher development program

Led by Sanjna Kapoor/Junoon Arts Trust

India, Bhutan

The Artful Teacher Workshop Program sees the teacher as a creative practitioner, much like an artist. Both are skilled professionals who are experts in their subject, use tools and techniques to work through the material that they choose, and both must do extensive research on what they are to embark on. An artist makes creative choices and so does a teacher, especially while dealing with 30+ minds and varied learning abilities simultaneously. Both add their own uniqueness to their work, which makes it truly authentic, specialised and inimitable. While the final product for an artist is the experience they create for their audience, a teacher creates a learning experience for their students. This shift from ‘teaching’ to ‘creating learning experiences’ is what this programme journeys towards.

Currently, I am a co-facilitator on the program.

At the core of this programme lies the belief that the sign of a truly healthy society is how central its arts are to the everyday life of its communities. From this belief we have worked at looking at how the artist creates their work. Just as the artist seeks to convey meaning of the world through observing, listening, wondering, exploring, experimenting, risking, failing, questioning and fearlessly creating her art, so should the teacher unfold learning in similar ways in the classroom. It is this artful approach to making meaning and finding ways of expressing it that builds tenacity and character that is central to The Artful Teacher Workshop Programme.
